Academic Brief
South High School has partnered with Talent Development Secondary, City Year and Communities in Schools to become a Diplomas Now High School. The goal of this partnership is to increase the graduation rate, personal growth and academic achievement of ALL South High School students.

There are four major program pillars:
  • Teacher Teams and Small Learning Communities
  • A focus on Curriculum and Instruction and Professional Development
  • Tiered Student Supports
  • Can-Do Culture and Climate
We are also focused on helping the students improve their ABC's: Attendance, Behavior and Course Performance.

South High School has placed students in prestigious universities throughout the country, including Harvard and Morehouse. We have an exceptional internship program that connects students to the community in which they live. Our staff is dedicated to being the most effective teachers possible.
Academic Support
All South High School freshman participate in our Diplomas Now Model and receive additional academic support in the form of:
  1. Increased Instructional Time: The schedule calls for more time in English Language Arts and Mathematics, using what TDS calls a "double dose" of instruction.
  2. In class, real-time tutoring through City Year for students who are in need of additional support.
We also have a partnership with After School All-Stars. This academic support program has a 3-tiered focus:
  1. Academic Support
  2. Enrichment
  3. Health and Wellness
South also offers academic support for the Ohio Achievement and Ohio Graduation Tests.
Curriculum
South High School offers a wide range of academic offerings in a nine period scheduled day format. Students can choose regular, humanities, or advanced placement core classes as well as a comprehensive array of arts including the visual (advanced placement) arts, instrumental and vocal music. We offer courses such as ACT/SAT preparation, college preparation, reading enrichment, aerobics and resistance training. South was chosen out of 12 cities at the National Diplomas Now National Summer Institute’s closing session in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday. The award was presented by Diplomas Now founder, Robert Balfanz of Johns Hopkins University.

In its first year with Diplomas Now, South High School has reinvented its school community—generating excitement and passion while helping students achieve impressive outcomes.

“The school’s leadership, staff and Diplomas Now team is cohesive and shares a vision and belief in all students,” said Balfanz. “As a result, this high school saw a 93% reduction in the number of students repeating ninth grade this year.”
